LEONIE BRICKWOOD

Since graduating with first class honours in Industrial Design from the University of Canberra in 2004, Leonie's influence on bathroom fitting design has gained both strength and momentum, delivering some of the most recognisable tapware ranges in the industry. As part of the Caroma team, her collaborations have resulted in numerous Australian and international design awards.

In addition to her work at GWA Leonie has a keen interest in jewellery, designing and crafting minimalist pieces in her spare time.

GETTING TO KNOW LEONIE BRICKWOOD

Q: What are your favorite product/s used in your Caroma capsule and why did you choose them?

I chose to use the Caroma Cupid Bath & Basin. I like the classic styling of this range and thought it would be a bit of fun to create a space that explored the concept of old meets new' through product, materials and texture.

Q: Describe your approach to design?

I would describe my approach to design as minimalist. As an industrial designer my approach to design is also very contextual and I'm a bit of a details person!

Q: What inspires you in your design and how do you come up with your ideas?

Inspiration is a fickle thing... I find you often don't know how and when its going to happen but that's what makes it so powerful. In saying that I find getting out of my usual routine and environment is always refreshing and gives me a chance to put things in perspective and think about things differently, and more creatively. Another thing is hearing about other designers being proactive and getting their work out there. Seeing other people being authentic, backing themselves and pushing the boundaries in design really inspires me. It makes me want to be a better designer.

Q: What is the biggest single influence on your creative thinking?

Sleep. And second to that would be culture I suppose. Being aware of what's happening around us as how peoples live can be made better or more enjoyable is a big influence.

Q: What is your strongest skill?

I'm a details person. This can be annoying to others at times but I like to think of it as a strength!

Q: What are you passionate about besides your work?

My family, health and wellbeing and getting out of the city.

BEING AWARE OF WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND US AS HOW PEOPLES LIVE CAN BE MADE BETTER OR MORE ENJOYABLE IS A BIG INFLUENCE.
